5G is finally here! Intercity's CTO, Matt Johnson takes a look at why Birmingham (home of Intercity's HQ) has been included in the first phase of the 5G roll-out and what access to 5G means for the city.
"Birmingham has long been at the heart of the UK’s digital and technology sectors, and this initial 5G launch will lead to further innovation and growth for an already flourishing city. Although this is only ‘phase one’ of the UK’s 5G journey, there’s no doubt that with greater connectivity and much faster speeds, 5G will act as a lightning rod, drawing in investment and talent from across the country and beyond.
"Outside of London, Birmingham has seen the highest number of UK start-ups for the last five years, and the capabilities and technologies that will be enabled and bolstered by the deployment of 5G will be seen as a major boon for those looking to turbocharge their businesses.
"Alongside connectivity up to 100 times faster than current speeds, 5G will also provide consumers and businesses alike with the bandwidth for millions of simultaneous connected devices, which will surely become a focal point for the advancement of robotics, AI and autonomous vehicles throughout the region."
