Following on from the recent success of our first GDPR round table and back by popular demand, we hosted our second GDPR event on the 19th September, at Juniper Networks offices in London. This time round, our industry experts explored the GDPR challenges organisations are currently facing in more detail, offering up step-by-step advice to help them on their GDPR journeys.
First up, we heard from Anthony Cairns, Founder, Thinkfortytwo. Anthony talked about how organisations are using technology to map to social trends and enable an efficient user base to meet the expectations of the citizens/customers accessing services in the future. Anthony also touched on the importance of confidentiality, integrity and availability, which are the basic principles of ISO27001 – Information Security, which evidences compliance to information security within organisations.
Next up up, Lee Fisher, Security Specialist from Juniper Networks gave a general overview of GDPR and brought with him a great interpretation and knowledge of how the ICO expects businesses to comply. Lee specifically talked around how GDPR is not an off-the-shelf product, nor a tick box compliance exercise, highlighting the importance of strong network security. Lee also talked through the ongoing pressure on valuable data from phishing attacks, advanced malware and emerging attacks on IoT.
To wrap up the day, we had our very own GDPR Practitioner, Naome Harrison, who presented a real-life case study showcasing our own approach to compliance. Naome shared invaluable tips and advice, as well as providing useful GDPR resources that attendees could take away to help them on their GDPR journey. Naome’s Q&A session with attendees sparked interesting debate, with a number of burning questions being asked. It was interesting to see that a lot of questions were around how GDPR will affect marketing specifically and the need to obtain consent to market product to prospects.
Naome Harrison, Quality Assurance Manager, Intercity Technology commented; “Being Intercity Technology’s DPO and leading our Internal GDPR project, I have found that the web and social media is full of advice about how GDPR says you should be compliant. However, there are no real case studies, tips or ideas on how to tackle the huge job that companies like Intercity have between now and 25th May 2018. It was fantastic to see so much interest in the room and lots of great questions from those who attended. Learning and interpreting GDPR can be down to perception, so having the opportunity to ask questions and have conversations with fellow peers was really useful.”
